Types of Mark up languages
- Presentation markup they are binary codes joined with document text to produce a what you see is what you get effects e g a word processing document
- Procedural mark up they provide instructions to programs that are to process a specific text e g Post script
- Descriptive/logical/conceptual mark up they are usually used to label documents e g <cite/>tag in HTNL
- GenCode is also known as generic coding and it wast discovered by William Tunniclife in the year 1967
- TeX it was created by Donald Knuth in the year 1970s and 1980s
- Scribe it was created by Brian Reid in the year 1980
- GML stands for Generalized Mark up Language it was created in the 1980s under influence from Scribe
- SGML stands for Scribe Generalized Markup Language developed in the 1980s
- HTML stands for Hyper Text Mark Up Language developed in the year 1989 by Sir Tim
- XML stands for Extended Mark Up Language developed by World wide consortium
- XHTML stands for Extended Hyper text mark up Language recommended by W2C
- same data file is composed of intermixing of text of a document with mark up instruction
- they specify a specific text characteristics
- they have tags with text enclosed between the tags
